Transportation alternatives for employees

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, commuting via public instead of private vehicles reduces carbon monoxide by 95%, volatile organic compounds by 92% and carbon dioxide by 45% per mile.

If these statistics aren’t motivation enough to encourage your employees to utilize transportation alternatives, consider the fact that commuters who opt for greener transportation demonstrate increased productivity and job satisfaction.

Ways to encourage employees to choose alternative transportation include:

Subsidizing or reimbursing the cost of public transportation, bicycles (or bike sharing services), skateboards or electric scooters. Provide secure storage for this equipment. Shower and changing facilities will be appreciated by these active employees.

Organizing and subsidizing or reimbursing a carpooling/ridesharing initiative on behalf of employees.

Choosing the location of your workspace to be easily accessible by public transportation or by bicycle, skateboard or electric scooters.

Implementing flexible work schedules that give employees options like telecommuting, compressed work weeks to decrease transportation, or staggered hours to avoid rush hour traffic.

Most importantly, recognize and reward employee efforts.
